The New Prince Aga Khan: A New Era of Leadership
On February 4, 2025, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini officially became the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Nizari Isma'ili Muslims, succeeding his father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV. This transition marks a significant moment for the Isma'ili community, as they welcome a new leader to continue the legacy of guidance and philanthropy established by his predecessors.
Born on October 12, 1971, in Geneva, Switzerland, Prince Rahim is the eldest son of Aga Khan IV and Princess Salimah Aga Khan. He received his early education at Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts before earning a bachelor's degree in comparative literature from Brown University in 1995. Later, he pursued further studies in management and administration at IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, equipping himself with the expertise needed to oversee large-scale philanthropic and development initiatives.
Throughout his career, Prince Rahim has played a crucial role in the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a global organization founded by his father to improve the quality of life in underprivileged communities. He has been particularly active in education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability efforts. His leadership in the AKDN Environment and Climate Committee highlights his commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.
In his personal life, Prince Rahim married Kendra Irene Spears, an American model, on August 31, 2013, in a ceremony held in Geneva. The couple has two sons, Prince Irfan and Prince Sinan. However, their marriage ended in divorce in February 2022. Despite personal challenges, Prince Rahim has remained dedicated to his mission of service and leadership.
The passing of Aga Khan IV was a moment of great sorrow for the Isma'ili community. His contributions to humanitarian efforts, education, and cultural preservation left a lasting impact on the world. His funeral was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Spain’s King Emeritus Juan Carlos. After the public ceremonies, he was laid to rest in a private burial at the Mausoleum of Aga Khan in Aswan, Egypt.
As the new Aga Khan, Prince Rahim assumes responsibility for guiding millions of Isma'ili Muslims worldwide. He will oversee a vast network of philanthropic efforts, continuing the work of the AKDN, which employs tens of thousands of people across multiple sectors. His leadership is expected to focus on modernizing and expanding these initiatives to address contemporary global challenges.
Recognizing his new role, King Charles III granted Prince Rahim the honorary title of "His Highness" on February 10, 2025. This recognition reflects his status as a global figure of influence and a leader devoted to humanitarian efforts.
The official inauguration of Prince Rahim as Aga Khan V is set to take place on February 11, 2025. This event will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Isma'ili leadership, continuing the principles of inclusivity, compassion, and service to humanity. As he steps into this significant role, the world watches with great anticipation, knowing that his leadership will shape the future of the Isma'ili community and beyond.
