The Fierce Encounter: A Real Action Story from the Lyari Gang War
Lyari, one of the oldest and most dangerous neighborhoods in Karachi, Pakistan, has long been infamous for its gang wars. Over the years, rival groups such as the Rehman Dakait gang and the Uzair Baloch gang fought brutal battles for control over drug trade, extortion, and territory. Among the many deadly encounters, one of the most intense shootouts occurred in 2012, when law enforcement launched a massive operation against the gangsters.
The Operation Begins
In April 2012, Karachi police, along with paramilitary forces, launched Operation Lyari to dismantle the stronghold of Uzair Baloch’s gang, which had been terrorizing the area with kidnappings, extortion, and targeted killings. The operation was expected to last a few days, but it turned into a deadly seven-day battle between heavily armed gangsters and security forces.
As police entered the narrow streets of Lyari, they were met with fierce resistance. The gangsters had already prepared for war, setting up barricades and using rocket launchers, machine guns, and grenades. The police were soon caught in a deadly ambush, as bullets rained down from rooftops and hidden shooters targeted officers in the alleys.
The Bloody Battle
The gangsters were well-equipped and had the home advantage. Using underground bunkers and secret escape routes, they outmaneuvered the police at every step. The fight escalated when law enforcement brought in Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) to advance into the gang-controlled areas. However, the gangsters, armed with RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades), targeted the APCs, destroying at least two vehicles and killing several officers inside.
One of the most shocking moments came when a senior officer, leading his team into one of Lyari’s most dangerous spots, was caught in a crossfire. With bullets flying in every direction, he and his men took cover in a small shop. The gangsters surrounded the shop, throwing grenades inside. The officers fought back fiercely, returning fire while calling for reinforcements. After hours of relentless gunfire, the police managed to break through and escape, but not without suffering heavy casualties.
Civilians Caught in the Crossfire
While the gangsters and police fought a brutal war, innocent civilians were trapped inside their homes, unable to escape the violence. Many families ran out of food and water as they hid from stray bullets and shrapnel. A heartbreaking incident occurred when a young boy, stepping out to fetch water, was hit by a stray bullet and died instantly. His family, unable to leave their house, had to mourn in silence as the battle raged
outside.
The Aftermath
After seven days of non-stop fighting, law enforcement finally gained some control over Lyari, pushing the gangsters deeper into hiding. Dozens of police officers and civilians lost their lives, while hundreds were injured. Although the operation weakened the gang’s grip on Lyari, it did not eliminate their presence completely. The war between law enforcement and Lyari’s gangsters continued for years, with occasional clashes erupting even in later years.
The Lyari gang war remains one of the bloodiest chapters in Karachi’s history. The 2012 operation was a testament to the brutality and resilience of these gangs, as well as the immense challenges faced by law enforcement. While peace has gradually returned to Lyari in recent years, the scars of its violent past still linger in the memories of those who lived through the horror.
