A Journey of Growth and Gratitude at AKUH
By Assad Ali Chishti, Unit Receptionist, Old Private Wing (P3), Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan
My journey with Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has been one of personal and professional growth, built on perseverance, learning, and a deep commitment to serving patients with compassion. I consider it a privilege to be part of an institution that not only leads in healthcare but also values the contributions of each member of its community, no matter how big or small.
My association with AKUH began several years ago when I joined as a Data Collector in the Department of Pediatrics. Back then, I was filled with a strong desire to contribute to meaningful research and to be part of something larger than myself. Working in pediatric research projects like the typhoid and measles studies gave me my first glimpse into the collaborative environment that defines AKUH. I learned how every role, from a research assistant to a senior consultant, plays a vital part in achieving excellence in patient care and medical research.
Over time, I worked on multiple projects across departments, including Community Health Sciences (CHS).
These roles allowed me to sharpen my skills in data management, patient communication, and team collaboration. I fondly recall the guidance and support I received from my seniors and colleagues, who always encouraged me to do my best and offered valuable feedback to help me improve. The culture of mutual respect and professionalism at AKUH was, and continues to be, deeply inspiring.
In 2023, I briefly worked as a Commercial Officer at K-Electric, and although it was a different experience, I realized how much I missed being part of AKUH's healthcare environment. Fortunately, I was able to return and continue my journey in familiar and supportive surroundings.
Today, I serve as a Unit Receptionist in the Old Private Wing (P3), and I truly feel at home.
Every day brings a new set of challenges and opportunities, and I take pride in ensuring that patients.
.and their families receive timely and courteous service from the moment they arrive. From managing appointments and coordinating with nursing staff to addressing patient queries with empathy, I see my role as one that directly supports the healing process.
Working in P3 has also taught me the importance of being calm under pressure. A hospital environment can be intense, but I’ve learned that a warm smile, a respectful tone, and a quick response can make a big difference in someone’s day—especially for patients who are already anxious or unwell. I strive to be a source of comfort and clarity for them, and that is something I hold close to my heart.
The values instilled in us at AKUH—service, integrity, excellence—have not only shaped my work ethic but also impacted my personal life. Being part of this institution has made me more patient, more understanding, and more committed to lifelong learning. I’ve also had the opportunity to observe and interact with professionals from diverse backgrounds, which has broadened my perspective and made me appreciate the strength that comes from teamwork and diversity.
z, the teams who supported me, and the patients who reminded me of the purpose behind our work.
AKUH is not just a workplace for me; it is a place where I continue to grow as a person and a professional. I look forward to contributing even more in the years to come and to being part of AKUH’s ongoing mission of delivering hope and healing.
To those who are just beginning their journey here, I would say: embrace every opportunity, learn from every challenge, and never lose sight of the impact your role can have. At AKUH, every effort counts—and together, we create a legacy of care.
