What Is Ehsaas? The Quiet Voice Within Every Heart

*Understanding the Meaning ehsaas*

Is it the feeling we get after hurting someone, when something inside us says, “Maybe I shouldn’t have treated them that way”?

Imagine a beggar comes to your door asking for help. You get annoyed and say:

“Go away! Why don’t you find a job? Why do you keep begging?”

But you don't know his circumstances. You don't know what difficulties brought him to your door. Maybe he has no one to support him, or perhaps life has left him with no other choice.

He quietly walks away.

What he feels at that moment, perhaps only he knows.

But later, you begin to feel uncomfortable. A thought comes to your mind:

“Maybe I shouldn’t have spoken to him like that.”

You go outside and look for him, hoping to find him and make things right.

But he is gone.

Maybe that feeling is what we call ehsaas.

Sometimes, however, people hurt others and never think about what they have done. They simply forget it. They continue with their lives without realizing how deeply their words or actions may have affected another person.

But life can be strange.

Perhaps one day, the same person experiences the kind of hurt he once caused someone else. Maybe then he finally understands what the other person must have felt.

And perhaps he thinks:

“I once did the same thing to someone else.”

Sometimes, life teaches us lessons that no book, teacher, or piece of advice can fully explain. When we experience pain ourselves, we may begin to understand the pain we once ignored in others. We realize that every person has feelings, and even a few careless words can leave a lasting mark on someone's heart.

But perhaps ehsaas is not only about realizing our mistakes after hurting someone.

Perhaps it is also when you are driving and see someone walking along the road, and you stop to offer them a lift. Or when you choose not to do something that might cause pain or difficulty to another person.

It may be a small act of kindness, such as speaking gently to someone who is already worried, listening to a person who has no one to talk to, or helping someone who cannot repay you.

These actions may appear ordinary, but they can mean a great deal to the person receiving them.

Sometimes ehsaas is not about correcting a mistake; it is simply about caring enough not to hurt someone in the first place.

I believe that somewhere inside every human being, ehsaas exists.

Perhaps it is a gift from God.

Some people recognize it quickly, while others take much longer. Some realize their mistakes immediately; others may only understand them when life makes them experience the same pain.

But when ehsaas awakens in the heart, we don't just begin to understand others—we begin to understand ourselves too.

We start looking at people differently. Instead of judging someone by their appearance, financial condition, or social position, we begin to think about their circumstances. We understand that everyone is fighting a battle that may not be visible to the world.

A person who appears rude may be carrying a heavy burden. Someone who remains silent may be struggling with problems they cannot explain. A person asking for help may have already tried many ways to improve their situation.

Of course, this does not mean that we should agree with every action or ignore wrongdoing. It means that we should try to understand people before judging them. We can correct someone's mistakes without humiliating them, and we can disagree with others without forgetting their humanity.

Sometimes, proving our point is less important than showing kindness and understanding to others.

Perhaps true ehsaas begins when we learn to pause for a moment and ask ourselves a simple question:

“If I were in this person's place, how would I feel?”

That one question can change the way we speak, behave, and make decisions. It can prevent unnecessary arguments, save relationships, and encourage us to offer help when someone needs it most.

We may not be able to solve every problem in the world, but we can choose not to add to another person's suffering. We can offer respect, patience, and understanding wherever possible.

And perhaps that is where the journey of becoming a better human being begins.

*Why Ehsaas Makes Us Human*

Maybe ehsaas is the quiet voice God has placed inside every human being.

The difference is simply in who chooses to listen to it in time.

Perhaps, the world does not need more powerful people, but more caring hearts. A little kindness, a few gentle words, or a helping hand can change someone's day. When we learn to feel another person's pain, we begin to understand what truly makes us human.

Ehsaas also teaches us that small actions can make a big difference in someone's life. Sometimes, a kind word can give hope to a person who feels lonely. A simple smile can make someone feel welcome, and a little help can reduce the burden of a person who is struggling. We do not always need money or great power to help others. We only need a kind heart and a willingness to understand their feelings.

We should also remember that every person has a story that we may not know. Someone who looks happy may be hiding sadness inside. A person who speaks less may be fighting a difficult battle. Instead of judging people quickly, we should try to understand them with patience and kindness. Our words can either heal someone's heart or leave a wound that takes years to disappear.

True ehsaas begins when we think beyond ourselves. It reminds us to respect our parents, care for our families, help those in need, and forgive people when possible. If we practise these values in our daily lives, our homes and society can become more peaceful. In the end, being human is not only about living among people; it is about making their lives a little better through our actions.
